Words 3 is an on-chain word-building game recently launched on the Redstone Mainnet by Small Brain Games. Players form words to earn points, with each letter’s price fluctuating based on demand, contributing to the game’s Treasury. Through strategic placement, players maximize points, potentially benefiting from multipliers and collaborative word-building. At the game’s end, the Treasury, funded by players’ letter purchases, is distributed based on individual scores.

Words 3 Overall

Words 3 is an on-chain word-building game created by Small Brain Games, recently launched on the Redstone Mainnet. Players can connect via Farcaster to chat.

It’s like crypto meets Scrabble; you form words to earn points but pay ETH for every letter you use. Each letter yields a different amount of points, and the price to play each one fluctuates throughout the game based on the demand. This price is determined by a VRGDA with a superlinear issuance rate.

You could score more points by using multipliers or when other players build on your words. At the end of the game, you’ll receive a cut of all the ETH spent by players based on how many points you score relative to how much ETH you spend.

Game rules

Letter pricing

Letter pricing escalates with each purchase but gradually decreases over time. Higher letter prices decline more rapidly. This price is determined by a VRGDA with a superlinear issuance rate, raised by paradigm.

VRGDA, a new Gas pricing algorithm for Ethereum. Key points include its dynamic adjustment based on real-time transaction conditions, fairer Gas fee allocation, and potential to reduce congestion. While promising, VRGDA still has room for improvement in parameters and adaptability.

Treasury

The game treasury accumulates all ETH spent on purchasing letters, which is later distributed among players who sell their points.

  • Buying letters

Buying the letters to start the game, you can buy 7 letters each time.

Points are the numerical values awarded to players for successfully placing letter and forming words.

To earn points, players must create words on the board by placing letters.

Each word must connect to an existing one. Simply click on an empty tile and select or type the desired letter. Point multipliers like “2L” double the letter’s points, while “2W” doubles the entire word’s points. Players’ rankings are determined by their total points, which can be viewed by hovering over their name on the leaderboard.

The numbers below the letters represent the points of each letter.

  • Place letters to form words

For example, I took the letter c I own and formed it into carn. I scored according to the score of each letter, with a total score of 6 points.

  • Place letters to form words

I took the letter O I own and formed it into Moby. I scored according to the score of each letter, with a total score of 14 points.

Players also receive additional points when other players create words using the letters they have previously placed. Specifically, players earn 13 of the points generated by each move in which their letter is utilized.

Reward distribution

Players earn ETH based on the proportion of their score to the total points earned.

The entire value of each move (excluding gas costs) is allocated to a treasury.

At the end of the game, the treasury is divided among players in proportion to their points. The game treasury, which collects all ETH spent on purchasing letters, is then distributed back to players who sell their points.

Potential strategies

  1. Utilize your high-scoring letters in high-scoring areas to form words, maximizing the points earned upon selling.

  2. For instance, as mentioned by the developers, for a letter to be used in a move, it must be directly adjacent to a new letter placed in that move, potentially creating opportunities for others to build upon.

  3. Place letters between gaps of high-scoring words to earn points for entire strings of words.

  4. If other players use your words to create new ones, you will receive additional points.
